James Bedborough was a local councillor who from humble beginnings as a stone mason went on to become a major building contractor.

He was responsible for much of the main Great Western railway line and worked vigorously as a local (Whig) politician and serving twice as Mayor.

His work includes Clarence Cresent and its gardens opposite, Clarence Road, Dorset Road and Trinity Place
