Maids Acre

The school was founded in 1784 by Queen Charlotte to educate about 20 girls, who afterwards were provided with servants’ places. It was maintained by the annual income produced from donations given in the early years, between 1798 and 1815 about £2,000 was given in donations. It was located on Maids’ Acre next to Bachelors Acre, details of where the school met, and its everyday life are scanty; but it is likely that premises were rented.

In 1819 the annual income from investments amounted to £56 7s. 0d., which was expended, together with subscriptions, in “the maintenance of a school for 20 girls, who are instructed in religion and taught reading and needlework, and are completely clothed.

When the National School was founded in 1819 the ladies school closed and was amalgamated into the National School and the income was used to provide free education and clothing for 20 girls at the New National School.

The 1833 government schools survey reveals the pupil numbers to be 10 girls.?

The charity is still in existence. Until 1944 grants were made to girls attending the Grammar School; and even today, when fees are no longer payable, grants are made to girls to buy “extras” for various school activities.
